English for the Maritime Industry

A language course book for seafarers

by Tony Grice

English for the Maritime Industry  is an ESP course book for mariners and trainees at a  pre-intermediate level (CEFR A1-B1) of  English language competence. It conforms to the recommendations of the IMO's Maritime English syllabus.

The course book presents English in an exclusively maritime context and includes answers to exercises, background information on unit themes for  language teachers, who may not have a lot of maritime experience, some teaching tips, a glossary and a bank of adapted maritime documentation for additional reading comprehension.

The course book is in fifteen units. Each unit introduces new vocabulary and provides instruction and practice in language structures as well as practice in reading, writing, listening and speaking. There is strong  emphasis on spoken English, especially through discussion and simulations of radiotelephone communication. The fifteen units are: 1. Ship knowledge, 2. Crew, 3. Getting underway, 4. Nautical charts,  5. Navigation,  6. On the bridge,  7. In the engine room,  8. Meteorology, 9. Distress, 10. Medicine, 11. Rules of the road, 12. Passenger care, 13. Pilots, 14. Berthing, 15. Cargo

Each unit covers a different maritime theme.

Students learn specialist vocabulary on every page.

Supported by background information and specialist tips, teachers can teach with confidence and answer students' questions.

Each unit includes work on pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension, listening, SMCPs and speaking.

There is a technical reading bank comprising 15 extra reading comprehension passages. These enable students to study authentic maritime documents adapted for language learning purposes.

We’re very impressed by the course which is exactly what our seafarer customers have been requesting for a great many years.

A welcome addition to meagre

The course is graduated and comprehensive. Teachers will no longer need to improvise teaching materials. Everything is provided for them in one volume and audio disc, freeing them up to do other things.
