English for the Maritime Industry

Questions and Answers

Question: Is the book suitable for self study?

Answer: Yes, but there is a lot of material in the book that is designed for pair-work and class discussion that obviously can’t be done by individuals. The reading and listening material can be used by a student working alone to develop their English language skills as well as developing pronunciation accuracy by using the audio CD alongside the course book.

Question: Is the course book relevant for training other maritime professionals as well as mariners?

Answer: Yes. A lot of the material in the bookdraws on communication between mariners and other professionals such as coastguards, VTS, maritime pilots, dockside workers etc., so the course is suitable for them too.

Question: Is it necessary to purchase the audio CD?

Answer: Well, the audio CD is not absolutely essential – all the audio scripts are included in the back of the course book and the SMCP radio exchanges are in text form as well as on the CD - so it would be possible to read these aloud. However, for the sake of authenticity, background sound effects have been added to the recordings on the audio CD and without the CD a lot of the effectiveness of the very important listening work is reduced.

Question: Is there a teacher’s book to go with it?

Answer: No, to cut costs for teachers and institutions a lot of the material that would normally go into a teacher’s book is included in the back of the course book: answers, background information to all the maritime themes, audio scripts and teaching tips.
