Materials for learning English for Specific Purposes (ESP)

People learn English as a second language because it's important for their income, so it is now common for English language courses to be tailored according to the learners' employment.

Because learning English for a specific purpose (ESP) is cost effective, organizations who want their work force to be proficient in the language, use companies like Idris to produce tailor- made English language learning materials.

Different styles of English for different uses

An Indonesian nurse working in a hospital in Glasgow needs English of a very different sort from a travel agent in Madrid. Therefore, a needs analysis which identifies what clients do with English is an important first step in writing learners' materials.

The needs analysis involves collecting authentic examples of the English that is used within a client's working world. We develop the means of teaching and practicing the language from this core material.

The sample chapter is from a language book for nurses called 'Everyday English for Nursing' by Tony Grice, one of our authors. The book is published by Elsevier Science. 'Everyday English for Nursing' is for overseas nurses, at an advanced level of English, who are looking to be employed by National Health Service Trusts in the UK.

The chapter illustrates the technique of using core material - in this case a hospital admissions form - and building language learning exercises around it.
